Safety Sirens
During normal operations, water enters the intake (upstream), flows through the powerhouse, and then exits through the tailrace (downstream). However, there might be times when we need to open the spillway gates to release water through the spillway.
If you are downstream of the facility and hear a siren, here’s what to know and do:
- Before the spillway gates are opened a siren will sound.
- Opening a spillway gate(s) will change the direction where the water is discharged, as well as water levels and flows from the spillway.
- Please leave the area immediately and move a safe distance away from the spillway.
- These sirens do not communicate an emergency, rather they alert river users of upcoming water level and flow changes.
