Land cables arrive in the Strait of Belle Isle

September 22, 2015 – Later this month, installation of the land cables will begin in Shoal Cove and Forteau as part of the Muskrat Falls Project, Strait of Belle Isle marine cable crossing. The land cables are a part of the system that will connect the submarine cables that cross the Strait, to the overhead transmission line running from Muskrat Falls to Soldiers Pond.

The first shipment of land cables arrived on the Northern Peninsula in early September. Land cables that will be installed near Forteau arrived in Labrador on September 21, 2015, and were safely delivered to the site the same day.

The land cables took approximately one year to manufacture in Futtsu, Japan, at one of only a few cable manufacturing facilities in the world. The seven land cable reels (three for each side of the Strait as well as a spare) were shipped more than 30,000 km before reaching their final destinations. In total, the cables were in transit for approximately 3 months.

Installation of the land cables on both sides of the Strait will be completed this fall.
