Spillway goes into operation at Muskrat Falls
August 3, 2016 – A major milestone was achieved at the site of the new hydroelectric generating project at Muskrat Falls today, with the facility’s spillway put into operation.
Four of the five spillway gates were safely and successfully opened this afternoon, opening the spillway and redirecting the flow of the lower Churchill River at Muskrat Falls for the first time.
With water flowing through the spillway, rock placement across the river to build a cofferdam (temporary dam) can continue in preparation for construction of the main dam at Muskrat Falls. Completion of the cofferdam and full river diversion is scheduled in the coming weeks.
